The Ride to Montauk August 26, 1980

7:30 AM  An hour and a half behind planned departure, we leave. PHEW.  New York, just like I pictured it...

35 min. 8:05 AM  We stop to buy film in Wading River.  We've been keeping up a good pace.  Mike was eaten by squirrels two miles back.

8:25 AM We leave after having some shit to drink.  Alan has had to make a bunch of alterations to his bike seat.  Way to go...

80 min. 9:10 AM We stop at McDonald's in Riverhead.

9:21 AM On the Road again to some really funky music in the parking lot...

114 min. 9:55 AM Mobil station in Hampton Bays.  We get a free map like last year.  Now we'll find a nice place to SIT.  No one dead yet.  Mike's squirrel wounds are starting to fester.

10:20 AM We leave the lawn of some bank in Hampton Bays.

144 min. 10:50 AM We stop to let Mike catch up by the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church in South Hampton.  Father O'Brian has given Mike the last rites as gangrene has set in in both legs.

10:57 AM Next stop: McDonald's. YUCGH.

150 min. 11:03 AM The Golden Arches--At last!

11:40 AM  We finish our leisurely  repast and once again resume our trek (tee hee hee hee...)

12:00 PM  (Mike writing) Well, it finally happened.  Paco gets a flat and gets to test out his brand new Zefal HP pump.  Fucking A.

12:14 PM (Mike writing) Fixed up and ready to go.  Where the fuck is Alan?

216 min. 1:00 PM  Stop for grapefruit juice in overpriced East Hampton.  Tempers flare as our legs begin to ache.  So this is a drive in restaurant in Hollywood?

1:20 PM  We leave East Hampton: what a drag it is to move.  Alan is hell bent on riding fast.  Well, fuck him.  I'm going to ride slow, fart a lot, and drink a lot of beer when I get to Woodies!  Who needs this shit?

222 min. 1:26 PM  I get yet another flat tire.  A fucking piece of bone went through my wheel.

1:40 PM  We ride out of East Hampton.

252 min.  2:10 PM  We stop by where Old Montauk Highway forks.  It takes Mike 10 minutes to catch up.

2:23 PM  We start up the fucking long hill.  Oh yes, we took the precaution to camouflage our bikes.  [?]

274 min. 2:45 PM  Woodrow's.   I never thought we'd see it.  Allah be praised.  Total riding time7 hours 14 minutes total.  28 minutes for flats.
